Sitting by the window, watching that damn familiar electric cable with the frayed wire end as it hangs from the roof and swings back and forth, back and forth just outside the glass, I was seized by a moment of pride over the Big Bailout. Okay, so it doesn't fix the root of the problem, so the foreclosures will continue, but looking from here, it seems quite impressive that what's been haggled over in Washington this weekend and finally written down really can be expected to take effect and be abided by and even bring some relief. Danger threatens, compromises are made, government acts, disaster is averted, and we can read about it in the papers (endlessly) -- that is actually very reassuring.
